Canada Welcomes Over a Million International Students, Says IRCC
With several universities ranked among the world’s top 100, Canada attracts more than 800,000 international students annually. The country offers exceptional study programs and is home to leading research facilities and academic institutions.
If studying abroad is part of your plan, Canada should be at the top of your list. Here is a comprehensive step-by-step guide to applying for a Canadian Study Permit.
Step 1: Understand the Requirements
Successfully applying to a Canadian educational institution involves understanding the various requirements for schools and their courses. It's crucial to research the rules and regulations governing the study permit application process. Ensure that you apply to recognized schools and approved study periods.
Start planning for your Canadian study permit at in advance. Common requirements across all universities and institutions include an updated passport, proof of proficiency in English or French through standardized language tests, and evidence of financial capability to cover your tuition and living expenses. Note that these requirements may vary between provinces, so careful, systematic planning is essential.
Step 2: Choose Your Course and Institution
Your first step is to confirm that the institution you’re interested in is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), as only DLIs can admit international students. You will need to decide on a specific course of study when applying, although the Canadian academic system allows flexibility for changing courses later. It’s advisable to thoroughly compare your options and choose a course that genuinely interests you.
Step 3: Take the Language Proficiency Test
All international students must demonstrate proficiency in English or French. For English, the IELTS and PTE are widely accepted, along with Cambridge English: Advanced and TOEFL scores at some institutions. For French, you can take the DALF, DELF, or TCF exams, with the TEF being the most commonly accepted.
Choose your test, pay the fee, and book your dates well in advance. Make sure to prepare thoroughly to ensure your application is not rejected due to language proficiency issues.

Step 4: Apply to Universities
Contact the universities on your shortlist, obtain their application packs, and submit your applications well in advance. While you may apply to multiple universities, consider the application fees, which range from $0 to $250 per application.
Don’t apply indiscriminately. Compare your options, select your preferred course and institution, and have one or two backups. Be meticulous when filling out application forms, and providing accurate information and supporting documents. After submission, wait for your acceptance letters. Once the university confirms, the university will send an acceptance letter, a crucial document for the next steps.

Step 5: Apply for a Study Permit
With an acceptance letter in hand, it’s time to apply for a Canadian Study Permit. Your application should include the acceptance letter, provincial attestation letter, your passport, and proof of financial support. Additional documents such as a letter of explanation, a medical exam, and a custodian declaration (for minors) may also be required.
A letter of explanation can help the visa officer understand your educational goals and your responsibilities as a student in Canada. A medical exam is needed if you plan to stay in Canada for more than six months, have recently visited certain countries, or intend to work in jobs that require public health protection.
If you’ve applied to an institution in Quebec, include the Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) with your study permit application. Schedule your biometric appointment (fingerprints and photo) promptly to avoid delays.
Step 6: Travel Time
Once your application is processed and, if required, an interview is completed, an immigration officer will decide on your study permit. If approved, you can start planning your trip to Canada. Your permit will have a start date, from which you are allowed to enter Canada. Plan your travel accordingly.
Step 7: Study Time
Upon arrival in Canada, an immigration officer will verify your study permit and other documents at the port of entry. This final step in the immigration process allows you to begin your journey as an international student in Canada.
What Happens After Your Studies Are Completed?
Canada's federal government views international graduates as ideal candidates for permanent residency. They are young, familiar with Canadian culture, proficient in languages, hold Canadian qualifications, and often possess work experience.
After graduation, the Post-Graduation Work Permit allows students to start their careers in Canada. Recent changes to the Express Entry selection system have facilitated the transition to permanent residency for international students. Additionally, there are multiple provincial immigration streams specifically for international graduates.
